SAVMA's Animal Welfare and Human-Animal Bond Committee

The purpose of this grant is to recognize projects that meet the following criteria: to present a sustainable and/or far-reaching project that demonstrates clear benefit to the humans and animals involved, enhance the education of veterinary students in tangible ways (i.e., providing more clinical experience, client interaction, etc.), provide a platform for veterinary professionals to be involved meaningfully in the local community, and to benefit as many SAVMA members as possible. This grant is not intended to fund individuals, and not intended to fund travel expenses.

Four winners of $500 each will be selected.  (This is subject to change based on applicant numbers and quality of projects.) This award can be used proactively or retroactively for projects carried out within the past 12 months. 

Submissions are due by 11:59 PM CST on Wednesday, November 14 and can be found

AVMA Animal Welfare Assessment Contest

Test your animal welfare knowledge by competing in this year’s AWJAC at Colorado State University on November 16-18, 2018!

The AWJAC is a great place to analyze the welfare of various types of animals in different scenarios.  You will determine the welfare of animals in virtually developed and live scenarios and then present your decision orally to the judges.  The AWJAC is also a fun opportunity to meet and mingle with other animal welfare experts!

This year’s species include:
Dairy Goats
Green Iguanas
Egg Laying Ducks
Live Assessment: Polo Ponies

Animal Welfare Judging & Assessment Competition

The 10th Animal Welfare Judging & Assessment Competition (AWJAC) is quickly approaching!

Michigan State University (MSU) will once again host this fun and educational event on November 21st and 22nd in East Lansing, MI.  The competition is split into three divisions: undergraduate, graduate and veterinary students. Students may compete as individuals or on teams comprised of 3-5 students.  This year competitors will be assessing giraffes (as the exotic species), working dogs (as the companion animal species), broiler chickens (as 1 of the agricultural animal species) and the on-farm assessment will pertain to beef cattle.

AVMA is pleased to offer assistance with travel expenses (transportation, lodging, meals) for veterinary students of AVMA Council on Education-accredited colleges/schools of veterinary medicine who choose to participate in the competition.  Travel assistance is made possible by an animal welfare activities grant to our Animal Welfare Division from GSK.  Up to $500 per veterinary student for up to 20 students will be provided, and advance application must be made using the form found at http://www.avma.org/issues/animal_welfare/intercollegiate.asp. Travel grant applications should be directed to:
