An important aspect of our clinical year would be experiencing externships, and they will be different for every individual. Externships offer veterinary students a rare opportunity to step beyond theoretical learning and into the realities of clinical practice. I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to complete a one-month veterinary externship overseas in Singapore at Clover Vet.
On my first day, I was immediately immersed in the fast-paced rhythm of small animal general practice. Over the course of one month, the externship offered a transition from theoretical learning to active participation in patient care. Each day brought a variety of consultations, procedures, and clinical challenges, highlighting the versatility required of veterinarians in a general practice setting.
A significant component of the externship involved hands-on clinical exposure. I had the opportunity to perform dental procedures and acquire dental radiographs, gaining practical insight into the importance of oral health in companion animals. Assisting in routine spay surgeries further reinforced my understanding of surgical asepsis, anatomical landmarks, and perioperative patient management. These experiences allowed me to appreciate how efficiency and attention to detail directly influence surgical outcomes.
In addition to procedural skills, I shadowed veterinarians during consultations, observing how clinical reasoning is applied in real time. From routine wellness checks to more complex medical presentations, I witnessed the development of diagnostic plans that balanced medical thoroughness with client expectations and financial considerations. These interactions emphasised the importance of clear communication, empathy, and adaptability in building client trust and ensuring optimal patient care.
The externship also provided extensive opportunities to refine essential technical skills. I was actively involved in patient handling and restraint, blood collection, intravenous catheter placement, endotracheal intubation, and anaesthesia monitoring. Performing these tasks under supervision strengthened my confidence and underscored the responsibility associated with even seemingly routine procedures. In particular, anaesthesia monitoring highlighted the need for constant vigilance and a thorough understanding of physiological parameters to ensure patient safety.
Beyond clinical skills, the experience offered valuable insight into the realities of daily veterinary practice. The fast-paced environment required efficient time management, effective teamwork, and the ability to adapt quickly to unexpected situations. Working alongside veterinary surgeons, nurses, and support staff reinforced the collaborative nature of veterinary medicine and the importance of each team member’s role in delivering high-quality care.
Overall, this externship was a formative experience that bridged the gap between academic learning and clinical application. It strengthened my technical competencies, refined my clinical reasoning, and deepened my appreciation for small animal general practice. The month spent at Clover Veterinary Clinic not only enhanced my practical skills but also reinforced my motivation to pursue a career grounded in compassionate, competent, and collaborative veterinary care. I would have never been able to be part of this externship without the help of Ross University's Professional Development Fund Program and Clover vet. I would like to thank both parties for this amazing experience and for making one of my favorite rotations during my clinical year.
