SAVMA Celebrates National Native American Heritage Month

This month SAVMA celebrates and supports our colleagues, friends, family, neighbors, and communities that identify as Native American. According to the 2010 Census, 0.9% of the U.S. population, or 2.9 million people, identified as American Indian or Alaska Native alone, while 1.7% of the U.S. population, or 5.2 million people, identified as American Indian or Alaska Native alone or in combination with another race. This is an increase since 2000 of over 39%. By 2060, the projected U.S. American Indian and Alaska Native population is estimated to reach 10 million people, or approximately 2.4% of the U.S. population.(1)
Native Americans constitute one of the most underrepresented minorities in veterinary medicine, both among practicing veterinarians and veterinary students (2).
Connect with the @NativeAmericanVeterinaryAssociation and @MCVMA Admins for more information on recognizing Native American voices in Vet Med.
