My SAVMA Symposium Experience

Lisa Corsale, Ross University

Experiences, Entry

If one has an opportunity to attend the SAVMA Conference next year, then it should be taken.  The trip not only helps you network in your field with different social activities but also there are wet labs, day trips, and lecturers.

You get to meet many specialists during the lecturers. For example, I was able to attend a large animal behavior talk given by Dr. Temple Grandin.  From her lecture, being able to read the behavior and interpret correctly how the animal feels, I am able to incorporate that same lesson into small animals. No matter what area of veterinary medicine you are interested in, there was a lecture for every topic imaginable.

SAVMA Symposium Registration Extended!

It's not too late! If you've thought about attending but haven't registered yet, it's not too late! The registration deadline for SAVMA Symposium 2011 at UC Davis has been extended to February 1st. Until then, you can still register for the low low price of $75. That's a cheap price for an amazing Spring Break in beautiful California! After that date, prices go up with registration closing on March 1st. You can register at http://savmasymposium2011.com/registration-2/

Some of the activities planned include a trip to Sacramento for a kickball tourney, dinner, DJ and a performance by CSU's own Bog Spavin! The next night you'll stay in Davis for the famous Farmer's Market (http://www.davisfarmersmarket.org/) and a show by the locally renowned 80's cover band, Tainted Love (http://www.taintedlove.com/). The last night we'll head back up to Old Sacramento for a fancy evening of wine tasting, dinner and art with Dr. Marty Becker (http://www.petconnection.com/about.php) at the Crocker Art Museum (http://www.crockerartmuseum.org/).

Aside from all these exciting nighttime activities there is a whole line-up of lectures, wet labs, athletic and academic competitions and of course, the exhibit hall full of free stuff!

So talk with your classmates and figure out your plans! Check out the SAVMA Symposium Website at http://savmasymposium2011.com/

SAVMA Symposium Travel Grant

Deadline is coming up December 20th.

The SAVMA Symposium is an excellent professional development resource for all SAVMA members.  In addition, the symposium is an especially valuable opportunity for SCAVMA Chapter Presidents to interact with students from other schools to get ideas which can be implemented by local chapters.  This year's SAVMA Symposium is being held March 24-26, 2011 at the University of California- Davis.  For more information please visit: http://savmasymposium2011.com/

Unfortunately, financial limitations sometimes prevent students and Chapter Presidents from being able to take advantage of the opportunities provided by SAVMA Symposium.  Therefore, the Economics and Professional Development Committee has started a travel grant program to help offset the cost of attending SAVMA Symposium.

Four awards will be given for $250 each.  Two awards will be open to any SAVMA member and two awards will be reserved for SCAVMA Presidents or President-elects.  Following Symposium, all winners will be asked to write a brief paragraph about their experiences at SAVMA Symposium for inclusion in the Vet Gazette.

To apply, email your completed grant application to SAVMA Economics and Professional Development Committee at savma.epdc@gmail.com, by December 20th, 2010.  Winners will be notified of selection in early January, 2011. You can copy and paste the questions below to fill out the application, or contact your school's SAVMA delegate for more information.

What better way to spend your spring break than in California at my alma mater? In other words, do it! If you haven't been to Symposium before, talk to other students who have to find out how much fun it can be.
